Laminate is a common word in hard surface floor coverings and yet is easily misused or even misunderstood.  From advice we get from friends or things we see on TV, the broad range of laminate flooring has saturated the market and created a terminology with multiple meanings.

Let start with what it’s made out of.  Laminate flooring is very similar to it’s countertop sibling, though is made with a different process:

 

• The bottom layer is the “backing” and is usually highly moisture resistant to help prevent the boards from warping.
• The inner core layer.  This layer is determined by the quality and brand, but should be composed of a highly dense and strong fiberboard that is held together reinforced resins.   Every brand carried by Custom Home Interiors is CARB 2 compliant for formaldehyde. The resins also aid in stability and extra moisture resistance.
• The image layer follows the inner core and provides the vivid and crisp picture you see on top. The better quality brands offer HD and 3D type images so these products not only look realistic, but are vibrant in color and texture.
